EasyClean skirting heating installed in a clean, bright hospital corridor
Developed with the NHS

Heating that can be mopped clean.

EasyClean LST is a sealed, anti-tamper, anti-ligature skirting-board heating system developed in cooperation with the NHS and major assisted-living providers. There are no grilles, fins or covers to remove, so it's wiped free of infection whenever the floors are mopped.

The radiator is where the infection lives.

The dust, lint and biological matter that collects behind and between radiator panels gives C. difficile and MRSA somewhere to live and multiply. The convection currents radiators rely on to distribute heat also distribute whatever is living in them, straight into the room air.

EasyClean replaces that with a single sealed aluminium profile at skirting level. There are no slots, no grilles, and nowhere for bacteria to incubate. The cleaning crew mops the floor; EasyClean gets wiped at the same time, with the same cloth. That removes the deep-clean teams, the corridor closures and the specialist tools LST radiator covers need. For a busy NHS site properly adhering to AHCP guidelines (LST radiators cleaned weekly), the saving runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.

Safe by design

Anti-ligature, anti-tamper, impact tested.

EasyClean has no exposed pipes, valves, brackets or fixings. There's nothing to tie a cord to or pull off, and no sharp edges to land on in a fall. Corner and joint lines are secured with through-bolted mechanical fixings and sealed flush with clinical pick-resistant mastic, so they resist sustained tampering. The top cap is anti-tamper and needs tools to remove. It has been specified inside Rampton and Broadmoor, where resistance to sustained assault sits at the top of the fixture-and-fitting brief.

It complies with HBN 27 as a low-surface-temperature emitter (front face under 43°C) and is impact tested against DHSS DN4, so there's no risk of burns to vulnerable patients, residents or children, and no concession on physical resilience. The LST option achieves that by spreading the heat output along the full perimeter of the room rather than a small, hot panel, so the front face stays under 43°C even at full output.

Above ground but not overhead

Radiant warmth, without the “hot head” effect.

Overhead radiant panels project heat down onto whoever sits beneath them, which many users with learning difficulties, dementia or sensory sensitivity find oppressive or distressing. Underfloor heating avoids that, but it's slow to respond, fights with floor coverings, and leaves care staff standing on heated floors for whole shifts (the “dead leg” complaint). EasyClean sits at skirting level instead: radiant warmth from the perimeter of the room, responding in minutes, with nothing hot above anyone's head and nothing hot underfoot.

Featured in the "Better Bedroom" initiative

Also appropriate for mental-health units, nurseries and pre-schools, SEN and custodial settings, and any public space where hygiene, anti-ligature and low-surface-temperature are specified in the brief.

Impact & durability tested

Tested against the worst day on the ward.

The video opposite was shot inside an assisted-living apartment prior to handover, and shows the kind of sustained assault EasyClean can take without damage. No LST radiator-and-cover combination offers the same durability, cleanability and anti-ligature profile in one unit. No underfloor system matches it on controllability, maintenance or retrofit simplicity. The healthcare and mental-health sector guides, the EasyClean datasheet and the BSRIA test report are in the specifier pack.

  • Fluid-resistant sealed top cap and coved floor interface that takes in under vinyl flooring for wet-room use
  • Through-bolted corner joints with clinical pick-resistant mastic; cap fixings tool-required
  • Optional silver-ion antimicrobial powder-coat finish for high-dependency and surgical environments
  • No trip or fall hazards, no sharp edges, and no removable parts on the visible face

One sealed profile. Two heights.

EasyClean uses the same 20mm-deep aluminium profile as ThermaSkirt, with the sealed Ovolo top cap and coved floor interface. Two heights cover the range: BM2 OV for most corridor, bedroom and living-space applications, and BM3 OV for larger wards and communal spaces that need more output at a lower flow temperature.

How it compares

EasyClean vs the three things it replaces.

Healthcare and care briefs usually land on one of three heating options: LST radiators with covers, overhead radiant panels, or underfloor heating. Each of those three has a known weakness. EasyClean replaces them with a single fixture that covers all three bases.

ConsiderationEasyCleanLST radiators + coversOverhead radiant panels
Cleaning regimeWiped down with the floor during the standard mop round. No tools or covers off, and no need to close the corridor.Full strip-down weekly per AHCP guidelines. Deep-clean team, specialist tools, and the ward or corridor out of service while it happens.Rarely cleaned in practice. Access needs a ladder or out-of-hours booking.
Infection controlFully sealed aluminium surface. No internal cavity for C. difficile, MRSA or biofilm to incubate in.Cover cavity collects dust, lint and biological matter. Convection currents then distribute it into the room.Minimal dust accumulation on the face, but no active hygiene benefit.
Anti-ligatureNo exposed pipework, valves, brackets or fixings anywhere on the visible profile. Naturally anti-ligature.Covers can be leveraged off; valves, tails and mounting brackets remain exposed underneath.Inherently out of reach at ceiling level.
Anti-tamperTop cap needs a tool to remove. Through-bolted corner joints with pick-resistant mastic for secure MH and custodial settings.Covers are engineered to come off for servicing. That is a known vulnerability in secure environments.Ceiling-mounted, so out of reach for tampering but also out of reach for routine repair.
Surface temperatureHBN 27 compliant LST option. Front face stays below 43°C even at full output.LST while the cover is on. 65–75°C radiator surface exposed the moment the cover is removed.Radiant face typically 80–120°C but out of contact distance.
User comfortEven radiant warmth all the way around the room. No hot head, no dead-leg from heated floors, and no cold corners.Localised hot-wall heat with a stuffy zone above the radiator and cold corners further into the room.Heat projected downward onto the occupant. Known to distress users with learning difficulties, dementia or sensory sensitivity.
Response time10–15 min to comfort from a cold start on a gas-boiler circuit. Shuts off in under 10 min.10–15 min from cold, but 20–30% of the rated output is trapped inside the cover and never reaches the room.5–10 min to feel warm, but the room has almost no thermal memory. Heat drops away fast once the panel switches off.
Retrofit impactReplaces the existing skirting. 1–2 rooms per day, no floor lifting, no pipework re-routing, single trade.Drop-in swap onto existing radiator tails, but each cover needs bespoke joinery to fit the wall.Requires ceiling void, local structural strengthening, and re-routing of lights, fire alarms and detection around the panel.
Heat-pump readyWorks at 35–45°C flow. Retains ~48% of rated output at dT20.Loses ~70% of rated output at 45°C flow. Usually needs major oversizing for heat-pump compatibility.Electric only. No flow-temperature story, so not a heat-pump emitter.
Installation

Retrofit in days, sealed in by flooring.

EasyClean is a single-trade install. Remove the existing skirting and rads, connect to the same wet central-heating pipework, coved floor trim taken in under vinyl. Corridors and rooms are back in service in a matter of days, not weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

What does LST actually mean, and does EasyClean qualify?
LST stands for Low Surface Temperature. In UK healthcare design the relevant standard is HBN 27, which caps the touchable surface temperature at 43°C so vulnerable patients can't be burned. EasyClean's LST option meets HBN 27 by spreading the heat output along the full perimeter of the room rather than a small, hot panel, so the front face stays under 43°C even at full output.
How is it cleaned?
Exactly the same way the floor is cleaned. Because the top cap is sealed to the wall with a fluid-resistant gasket and the bottom is sealed to the floor with a coved trim, you can mop the profile at the same time as mopping the floor. No tools, no covers off, and no deep-clean team required. The AHCP guideline for LST radiator covers is a weekly full-cover strip-down; on EasyClean that requirement goes away.
Is it actually anti-ligature, and can patients remove the corner joints?
No, they can't. There are no exposed pipes, valves, brackets, fixings or sharp edges anywhere on the visible profile. Corner and joint lines are secured with heavy-duty through-bolted mechanical fixings and sealed flush with clinical pick-resistant mastic, so they resist sustained tampering. The top cap can't be removed without tools. It has been specified and installed at Rampton and Broadmoor where that's a daily concern.
Is there impact-resistance evidence?
Yes. EasyClean is impact tested against DHSS DN4. The video on this page was shot in an assisted-living apartment and shows the profile resisting sustained assault. The BSRIA test report and project case studies in healthcare and secure environments are in the specifier pack; full DN4 test reports and anti-tamper test methodologies are available on request from the spec team.
Is there an anti-microbial finish option?
Yes. By special request for high-dependency, surgical or isolation environments, the aluminium extrusion can be powder-coated with a silver-ion antimicrobial finish. Standard finish is Cricket White (RAL 9010); any RAL is available to order, and the cap can be specified in a contrasting colour for dementia and mental-health wayfinding.
How does it compare on infection control to LST radiators with covers?
Covered LST radiators still have an internal dust-and-debris cavity behind the cover, which is where C. difficile, MRSA and similar find somewhere to live. The convection the radiator relies on distributes whatever is in there into the room. EasyClean has no cavity. It's a sealed radiant profile, cleaned on the same cycle as the floor. Whole-site cleaning costs typically drop by tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.
Does it work on a heat pump?
Yes. EasyClean is an oval-tube aluminium profile with a large radiant surface area, so it gives real output at 35–45°C flow temperatures (where standard LST radiators lose ~70% of their rated output). That's why it fits the current public-sector push to get heat pumps onto NHS and care estates.
What size and colour options are there?
Two heights: BM2 OV at 160mm and BM3 OV at 215mm, both 20mm deep. Standard colour is Cricket White (RAL 9010), but any RAL can be matched to order. Contrasting top cap colour is available. Lengths up to 6m per section.
Can it be used in a wet room?
Yes, when installed with the coved floor trim and sealed top cap. The whole profile is fluid-resistant and the coved interface lets vinyl flooring be lapped up onto the profile for a wet-room-grade junction.
What does it connect to?
Standard two-pipe wet central heating. It takes the same 15mm pipework a radiator connects to. Push-fit connectors, no soldering, no sealant, no glue. Typical single-trade retrofit.
What are the control and BMS options?
Anything you'd normally use with a wet emitter: 2-port valves, thermic head and valve, manifold plus actuators for zoned systems, or a full BMS interface on larger sites. On clinical estates the usual approach is to control flow temperature centrally at the BMS manifold with weather compensation, which keeps the LST option compliant without needing flow-restrictor valves exposed locally on the ward. EasyClean will also drive from standard smart thermostats (Hive, Nest, Tado, Heatmiser) where that's preferred, for example in extra-care apartments.
How efficient is it compared with LST radiators?
Typically 13% better than a standard LST radiator on a gas-boiler circuit, and up to 25% better when paired with a heat pump or other low-flow-temperature renewable. That's because of the larger radiant surface area and the way EasyClean holds output at lower flow temperatures.
