Cutting out superbugs

Andy Burnham MP visiting Discrete Heat in Atherton, with managing director Martin Wadsworth

A business which hopes to improve health and safety in hospitals with their new heating system ThermaSkirt was boosted by backing from a local MP.

Shadow Secretary of State for Health and MP for Leigh Andy Burnham visited DiscreteHeat, from Atherton, to view the ThermaSkirt product and discuss its possible use in the NHS.

The ThermaSkirt works by replacing radiators and skirting boards with a panel which radiates heat and can be wiped clean with a standard floor mop.

The company believe using ThermaSkirt in hospitals could save millions of pounds and significantly cut rates of ‘superbugs’ and other diseases found within hospitals, as they say some of the bacteria that cause these conditions are often found in radiators.

Some hospitals in the region, such as Trafford General, have already adopted the new heating system, but DiscreteHeat want ThermaSkirt to eventually become the standard choice for hospitals across the country.

Mr Burnham, who visited the factory with Lee Panter from the NHS Technology Adoption Centre, toured the DiscreteHeat factory with managing director Martin Wadsworth, met staff and was given a demonstration of how the ThermaSkirt works.

He said:

"This is a well-designed, locally made product that could bring significant benefits for the NHS. I hope to help open doors for DiscreteHeat to achieve a greater awareness in the health service."
